Why You'll Love This Air Fryer Recipe
- They're a great, easy, and convenient snack.
- Air frying frozen sweet potato fries means you'll be need less (or zero!) added oil, making them healthier than deep frying!
- Air frying only takes 15 minutes, which is 5-10 minutes faster than baking them in the oven.
- They're versatile - eat them plain or add whatever seasoning you have on hand!
Ingredients
- Frozen sweet potato fries: You can use any that you like! My favorites are Trader Joe's and Alexia.
- Oil spray: Use a high smoke point oil since we're air frying at high temperatures. I recommend avocado oil (400°F), ghee (450°F), or additives-free refined coconut oil (400°F).
How To Make It
- Preheat the air fryer. I always preheat my air fryer to get the best texture. Spray the basket with a little bit of oil and turn on the preheating. If your air fryer doesn't have a preheating function, simply turn it on at 400°F and let warm up for 3-4 minutes.
- Cook the fries. It's very important to cook your fries in batches. Adding too many at once will cause the fries to steam rather than fry. I like to do ⅓ of the bag at a time, but you can go up to ½ the bag if you have a large air fryer (4 quarts or bigger). You may need to add more cooking time.
- Shake halfway. Since each air fryer is different, the cooking time will vary. I have a 6-Quart Instant Vortex and like to take my fries out around the 10 minute mark. Check on your fries after 5 minutes, shake the basket, and continue checking every 2-3 minutes.
- Option to season. If you want to season them, add the hot fries to a bowl and add your seasoning. Shake the bowl until the fries are evenly coated.
- Let cool. It's best to serve the fries right away. But if you're not, let them cool on a wire rack. If you cool it on a flat surface, they'll steam and lose their crispiness.
Top Tips
- Preheat the air fryer. You wouldn't cook food in a cold oven right? Preheating the air fryer will make sure the fries have the best texture.
- Use an oil with a high smoke point. When an oil is heated past its smoke point, it starts to produce free radicals. These can contribute to health problems and diseases. In addition, the flavor profile in the oil starts to become bitter and acrid, which affects the food we're cooking it in. For more information on smoke points, read this article by Serious Eats.
- Adjust the time as needed. Air fryers are all different so do a test batch to determine what time works best for your machine. Thicker fries will need more time as well. Check on the fries every 5 minutes to prevent burning them.
- Shake the fries halfway through. If your air fryer doesn't rotate, shake the basket halfway to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
Substitutions
- If you don't have spray oil, brush a little oil onto your air fryer basket.
- Feel free to season your fries with whatever you'd like! Cajun, taco, chili lime, or garlic seasoning would go great with sweet potato fries.
- You can apply this method to all the frozen fries out there - sweet potato waffle fries, tater tots, crinkle cut fries, and more! Just adjust the time as needed. Thicker fries like waffles fries will need more time.
- To make this gluten-free, read the ingredients carefully and choose frozen fries that are gluten-free. Trader Joe's frozen sweet potato fries has wheat starch so avoid those. Alexia's version is gluten-free.
Storing & Freezing
Storing: If you have leftover Sweet Potato Fries that have already been air fried, you can store them in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. To reheat, air fry them again at 375°F for 5-7 minutes until crispy again.
Freezing: You could re-freeze them again but the texture could change. Lay the fries on a baking sheet in a single layer and with space in between each fry. Store in freezer for about 30 minutes until mostly frozen. Then store in a zip-top bag with as much air removed as possible. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months.
FAQ
There might have been too many fries in the air fryer at once, causing them to steam, or they were cooled in a pile, in which the steam would make them lose their crispiness. To prevent this, air fry in small batches and let the fries cool on a wire rack.
That depends on what you consider healthy! I think they're a quick and convenient snack and can fit into any diet if eaten in moderation. Air frying them will definitely be a healthier option than deep frying them.
My favorite brands are Alexia and Trader Joe's. Alexia has a lot of different shapes and sizes (waffles, crinkle cut, puffs) but Trader Joe's has the best texture in my opinion.

Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Fries
Equipment
Ingredients
- 15 oz bag frozen sweet potato fries
- Oil spray
Instructions
- Lightly spray air fryer basket with oil. Preheat at 400°F. Keep the fries frozen until the air fryer is preheated.
- When hot, add about ⅓ of the bag to the basket. Make sure to not overcrowd the air fryer or else they won't crisp. The more fries you add, the longer the cook time will be.
- Air fry for 8-15 minutes, depending on your air fryer and the level of char desired. I take mine out at 10-11 minutes. Toaster oven style air fryers may need more time, about 5-10 more minutes. Shake the basket halfway through frying.
- Let the first batch cool on a wire rack. If you're going to season them with additional salt or seasoning, add the fries to a bowl and add the seasoning. Shake well until evenly coated, then let cool on a wire rack with space in between the fries.
- Preheat the air fryer again. Add another batch of fries and repeat as many times as desired. Spray the basket with more oil if the fries start to stick.
- Serve the fries warm with seasoning and/or dip of your choice.
