🥟 Crispy and Easy Homemade Chips
Traditional Chinese wonton wrappers are made from flour, eggs, and water. You can find them in popular recipes like wonton soup, Crab Rangoons, and Potstickers.
Wonton chips are made by frying, baking, or air-frying paper-thin wonton wrappers. The texture is perfectly crispy, light, and irresistible. Wonton chips are often on the menus of Chinese-American restaurants as a snack with dipping sauce, or as a topping on soups and salads.
I decided to make Air Fryer Wonton Chips to keep the health benefits of baking while maintaining the crunchy texture of frying. I love that you can still achieve golden brown and crispy wonton chips with a fraction of the oil!
They’re a great snack on their own, or they can be served as an appetizer paired with ceviche, Lemon Dill Hummus, or Buffalo Tuna Dip. Just note that the thickness of the wonton wrappers will determine the way they can be used!
Why You'll Love It
- Versatile: Use thick or thin wrappers, cut them into triangles or strips, or pair them with dips, salads, and soups. Air Fryer Wonton Chips are easily customizable.
- Quick and easy: All you need is 3 ingredients and 10 minutes for these homemade crunchy chips. Add the wrappers to an air fryer and press start. It doesn’t get much simpler!
- Healthy: The air fryer is a much healthier alternative compared to traditional deep-frying methods.
- Beginner-friendly: Homemade wonton chips are hard to mess up, even if you’re not savvy in the kitchen. And don’t worry about breaking the wrappers — they crisp up all the same!
🧂 Ingredients
- Wonton wrappers: I recommend thin wonton wrappers for a light, airy, and crunchy texture. You should be able to find them at most grocery stores in the refrigerated section by egg roll wrappers. In Asian markets, they're usually in the freezer or refrigerated sections. My favorite brands are Hong Kong Noodle Company or Twin Marquis.
- If you see "Hong Kong style" and "Shanghai style" wrappers, either one will work. Hong Kong style wrappers are thinner and have the characteristic yellow color from eggs. Shanghai style wrappers do not have eggs, are a little thicker, and are usually round. I recommend Hong Kong style, but either would work.
- Oil spray: My go-to oil spray is avocado oil due to its high smoke point, but any neutral vegetable oil will work.
- Salt: I prefer kosher, sea, or pink Himalayan salt since it provides a more balanced flavor than table salt. Season the air fryer wonton chips as soon as they are finished to help the salt stick better.
Substitutions & Variations
- If you’ll be serving the chips with a heavier dip, opt for medium-thickness wonton wrappers. You can also make wonton strips instead of chips to serve on top of soups, stews, or salads.
- If you don’t have cooking oil spray, lightly brush the wonton wrappers with your favorite vegetable oil.
- Change the flavor profile of your chips by using infused salt like black garlic ginger salt, lemon zest salt, rosemary salt, smoked salt, habanero salt, or truffle salt. Alternatively, season them with garlic powder, onion powder, dried herbs, Chinese five spice, or Parmesan cheese.
- To bake wonton chips, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, spray the wrappers, and bake them at 400ºF in a single layer until golden brown and crispy.
- Make deep-fried wonton chips by heating a few inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot. Once it reached 350-375ºF, fry the wonton wrappers for a few minutes until golden. Drain them on paper towels or a wire cooling rack.
👩🏻🍳 How To Make Air Fryer Wonton Chips
STEP ONE: First, cut the wonton wrappers to your desired shape. I like making triangles but there's no wrong choice here! Gently separate each layer.
STEP TWO: Preheat your air fryer to 375ºF - if yours doesn't have a preheating function, simply let warm up first for 5 minutes.
Spray the basket with oil and add a single layer of wonton wrappers with minimal overlap. Then spray the tops and add 1-2 additional layers if desired. I would do 1-2 layers maximum for even frying.
Air fryer for 3-5 minutes, shaking every 1-2 minutes, until golden and crispy.
STEP THREE: Transfer air fried wonton chips to a cooling rack and immediately salt. Repeat as needed.
💭 Top Tips
- Cook in batches: I recommend air-frying the wonton chips in 1-2 layers per batch. They will brown and crispy unevenly if there's too much overlap.
- Keep a close eye: Cooking time may vary based on the air fryer model and the thickness of the wrappers. I'm using the 6-Quart Instant Vortex Air Fryer. Test a smaller batch first to determine the exact time it takes your specific air fryer.
- Remove when golden: Your wonton chips will continue to lightly cook once they are removed from the air fryer. It’s best to take them out when they've just turned a golden color. It's ok if some spots are still pale. Cooking them for too long will result in dark chips, which taste quite bitter.
- Salt immediately: Salt the crunchy wonton chips immediately while they’re still wet from the oil. The salt sticks better this way.
- Use all the wrappers: Don’t worry about making the perfect chips! If you have broken wrappers, use them. They all taste the same once they’re crisped up. Just avoid soggy wrappers that are usually on the bottom of the stack.
- Different shapes: Play with the shape and size of your chips. Thin strips make a perfect garnish for soups, salads, and Hawaiian poke bowls. Larger chips are great for snacks, dips, and nachos!
What To Serve With Easy Air Fryer Wonton Chips
You can make a delicious snack out of just Air Fryer Wonton Chips, but I love pairing them with dips like these:
- Crab Spinach Artichoke Dip
- Buffalo Tuna Dip
- Lemon Dill Hummus
- Crab Rangoon (prepare the filling as a dip instead)
- Sweet and sour sauce
- Hot mustard sauce
- Spicy peanut sauce
- Sweet chili sauce
🥡 Storing & Make Ahead
Storing: Serve Air Fryer Wonton Chips right away, or let them cool and store them at room temperature. Keep them in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to 6-7 days.
Freezing: For longer storage times, freeze the wonton chips in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3-4 months. When you’re ready for more, thaw the amount you need at room temperature. Just be aware the texture will slightly change once thawed.
Make Ahead: I recommend air frying wonton chips up to 4-5 days in advance.
